This is a multicache with two stages. The first stage is a plate on the fence of the River Control Memorial Place. On the plate, you'll see the coordinates of the final stage with the cache. However, the hiding place was demolished. To get the coords of the new hiding place you'll do this: Subtract 87 from the last three digits of the N coords on the plate and add 229 to the last three digits of the E coords on the plate. The final stage is a mile-long walk from the first one.
Szeged has been fighting with the floods of the rivers Tisza and Maros for centuries. Originally the city was built on higher grounds but after the rivers were "regularized" or straightened in the 19th century to occupy more land for agriculture, the yearly floods became more and more devastating. In the spring of 1879 the city was ruined by a huge flood but in a few years time it was rebuilt with the help of the whole country and foreign capital cities. The Memorial Place displays a lot of documents and equipment from that era. It is open only between 9a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tue. Thu. and Fri. but then the guard will be happy to show you around.
The cache is on the floodplains of the Maros river, which can be under water in spring. So we put the cache a bit higher up in a hole of a member of a magnificent row of silver maples.
Be prepared for some mud in wet seasons and a lot of mosquitoes in summer.
