A cache close to a parking place in a spectacular location.
Chanonry Point juts out into the Moray Firth opposite another point which has Fort George at the end. The tide rip through the narrow gap is very fast and this leads to rough seas and strong currents on even a calm day. This is a very popular spot for wildlife watchers - different types of seals are often seen here, but it is dolphin watching that the Point is famous for. There are only 2 areas around the UK shoreline where dolphins are resident, and this is one of them. From the Inner Firth at Inverness to out along the coast here, as well as Cromarty and over to the Banff - shire coast - nearly 100 different dolphins have been individually identified.
The best time to spot the dolphins is about two hours after low tide. The dolphins wait for fish that are swept back up into the Inner Firth towards Inverness through the narrow channel between Chanonry Point and Fort George.
There is a small car park at the end of the road after passing through the golf course. This can often be full in the summer as the end of the point is very popular. Don't follow your GPS as this will indicate that you need to go through the lighthouse grounds. This is private property so either go beneath the sea wall to the south (if the tide is out!!) or through a narrow lane on the north side behind the lighthouse. This will take you towards the beach on the east side of the Point and to the cache. Hopefully the cache will not have been washed away in any of the high tides!
Please observe the signs - keep off any walls and don't go swimming!
