Geocache Description:

The cache is situated app. 150 m from the watchtower, left of the hiking track. Normal plastic box, easy to find.

Irottko (Geschriebenstein - Writtenstone) is the highest peak in Northern-Hungary, famous hiking place. Visitors will experience magnificent view from the watchtower, assuming excellent weather you can even see the Balaton (Plattensee). This neighbourhood is the crown jewel of the Irottko (Geschriebenstein) Naturpark. At the watchtower before the Hungarian EU accession you could freely and officially cross the border. Nowadays any EU citizen, anytime, anywhere can cross the border. Before 2005 sometimes Austrian border guards might check your ID, but since 2006 both Austrian and Hungarian officers have disappeared. The watchtower is on the Austrian side, 1 meter off the border. (The watchtower: N 47° 21.170' - E 16°26.025') From Hungary you can drive your car or bicycle via Velem till the Hörmann spring. From the spring you have to walk app. 2.5 km. Extremists may use MTB. From the Austrian side it is slightly easier: park your car at a restaurant / memorial at the main road nr. 56. (Parking place in Austria: N 47° 20,822' - E 16° 24,679'). From the memorial you have to walk app. 1.8 km, the route is suitable also for bikes. The cache is situated app. 150 m from the watchtower, left of the hiking track. Normal plastic box below a pine tree, easy to find. The cache is only 5 m from an Austrian-Hungarian border pole, on the Hungarian side, but nowadays EU citizens can legally cross the border anytime, anywhere.
