Crammel Linn is a spectacular waterfall in a deep gorge. There is a half-mile approach over moorland with a rough path before you can scramble down into the gorge. It is possible to climb down to the waterfall, where there are areas of flat stone and grass for picnics but you will have to climb back out to get to the cache. If you only want to visit the cache wait until you are upstream of the waterfall before descending to avoid a dangerous section of sheep-path.
This is a beautiful site, which does not receive the numbers of visitors you might expect from such an impressive and atmospheric place. In spring you will see skylarks singing over the moorland approach and ravens and peregrines nesting on the cliffs of the gorge. In summer there are numerous mountain flowers to find, including butterwort on the wet ledges near the waterfall.
Care is needed if hiking in the area is intended as it is on the edge of an RAF bombing range which I have seen used - but that was a while ago. There is a military base nearby, so watch out for the road signs and the red flags ! It's not uknown to stumble over soldiers on exercise, crouching in the bracken.
The cache is well hidden, in a translucent plastic box. Please take time to push it back well into its cave and replace the stones and bracken covering it.
Waymarks:
Turn right at N55'00.753 W002'35.246 into a 'culdesac' signed road.
Car park at N55'01.236 W002'34.323 (yes, that is an aircraft lying out on the moor - now do you believe that it is a bombing range ?)
Follow the quad-bike track east to the edge of the gorge.
