Geocache Description:

Just a stroll (or ride) in the park

This cache is primarily oriented towards mountain bikers, but all are welcome to stop by.

As an eco-freak, I'd like to see all user groups in parklands and open space existing in happy harmony. Coexistence often requires nothing more than simple courtesy, and I'd like to help encourage a little more courtesy among the high-speed user group (of which I'm a member) - mountain bikers. Bikes are sufficiently fast, and sufficiently quiet, that they can surprise hikers and horses with their sudden appearance. A little advance warning, like sounding a bell, lets other trail users know that a bike (or an ice cream truck) is coming down the trail, and I've gotten a number of positive comments from other user groups on the effectiveness of the bell I use on my bike. So I've stocked this cache with various bells, all with easy-to-remove lanyards so you can take the bell off if you're going slowly, but you may find (as I did) that you get used to the bell and stop hearing it after awhile. A bell is not a substitute for slowing down before turns and other areas where visibility is restricted, but rather an unobtrusive way to let other user groups know you're out there.

If you walk to the cache from the main parking lot, you can easily spend two hours (including breaks) getting here - it's 90% flat, but it's kinda pretty, too, and that doesn't invite record speeds. Also, there are a couple other caches nearby to help distract you. Other access points (which I won't discuss, 'cause exploration is fun and you oughta try it!) or using a bike can cut access time to less than twenty minutes, but you'll miss some of the scenery. Please observe parking restrictions at the 'alternate' access points, as space is very limited. After the cache, I recommend taking the Bulldog (a hint!) all the way to the ridge - it's a killer climb, but you can see from Baden-Powell to Santa Monica to San Nicolas to Ventura to Topatopa from the ridgetop.

Cache is a camo-painted tupperware with only a half-hearted job of hiding. Original cache contents, besides the bells, include a bottle of White Lightning, a VistaLite LED tail-light for your bike, and a tube patch kit. Have fun, and play nicely with other kids.
