In the early part of last century, Harry Ell devoted his life to
establishing the Summit Road and the wayhouses along it. There was
the Sign of the
Takahe, the
Kiwi, the Bellbird, and the
Packhorse. (The Summit Road
Society page has some good history and links)
However, Harry had nothing to do with the Sign
of the Polar Bear!
The Sign of the Bellbird had fallen into ruins, but is now
partly restored and a great spot for a picnic with a wonderful
view.
The cache is in a 600ml round plastic snaplock container, well
hidden in a tree.
(FEB11 note: the thorns have grown since the placement, so we've
increased the Terrain rating by a point to provide some
warning!)
