In the early part of last century, Harry Ell devoted his life to establishing the Summit Road and the wayhouses along it. There was the Sign of the Takahe, the Kiwi, the Bellbird, and the Packhorse. (The Summit Road Society page has some good history and links)However, Harry had nothing to do with the Sign of the Polar Bear!
The Sign of the Kiwi is now a restaurant, cafe and Park Rangers HQ, and a popular spot with visitors and locals alike.
The cache is about 80m from the main building and a few metres off the track, in a 2l plastic snaplock container.
