Geocache Description:

Cache repaired as at 10/10/2010 (new container).

Navigate to one of the car parks on the A470 - either the Storey Arms Centre or the more convenient one a few hundred metres south.

Just past the toilet block start your journey up the 'trade route' which will take you up to the two highest peaks in South Wales - Corn Du at 873m and Pen y Fan at 886m.

After finding the cache do not return the way you have come but instead follow the ridge to the very poignant memorial to the little 5 year boy (Tommy Jones) who died in this desolate area in 1900. The obelisk is located at N51 53.121 W3 27.215 and overlooks Cwm Llwch, a superb example of a glacially created lake-cirque. The inscription on the obelisk reads, "This obelisk marks the spot where the body of Tommy Jones, aged 5, was found. He lost his way between Cwm Llwch farm and the Login on the night of August 4th 1900. After an anxious search of 29 days his remains were discovered on September 1st. Erected by voluntary subscription."

Do not underestimate the terrain and come prepared. After visiting the Tommy Jones memorial you will need a map to navigate back to you car unless you wish to climb back up to the well-worn 'trade route' and I don't think you will feel like doing this!

NB The peak of Pen y Fan is a virtual cache - see GC5250.
