Geocache Description:

There used to be a wooden stockade near this location. Now there is a plaque on a large rock.

Early settlers in Moscow felt threatened by the possibility of an uprising from some Native Americans. Nothing ever happened here.

They constructed 3 wooden stockades in the Moscow area to protect themselves. This location had the largest stockade.

To log this cache, email me the time between the debacle at Little Big Horn and the construction of Fort Russell.

In response to the questions of: Why here? Ground water was available at a shallow depth, so a well could have been sunk. (Surface water was not prized for a fort, as it could be contaminated more easily.)

As for not being on high ground, Indians virtually never attacked a fortified encampment (Hollywood movies take artistic license with historical practice), since the Indians would suffer excessive casualties.
