Geocache Description:

A very urban cache. Be prepared: Urban means a lot of people around, so you may need to wait for a few to clear out, but this location does have just a bit of privacy.

In February 2002, the LEO newspaper published a list of things a person might say or do that would brand them as being from Louisville. Readers sent in the items, and a recurring theme was "giving directions based on things that aren't there anymore or names that have changed, but your directions never confuse any of the other Louisvillians (Example: "Turn where the White Castle was on Eastern Parkway; down the street from the old Sears; take the Jefferson Freeway, etc.)".
This is the second in what I hope to be a series of caches located at such directional landmarks that aren't there. The second most quoted site in the article seems logical for this second cache.
White Castle stood as a neighborhood landmark at Bardstown Road and Eastern Parkway for 32 years before it closed and was leveled in December 1988, after a dispute over renewal of its lease. Actually, there were no fewer than three White Castles there; Each one being built bigger than the one before it as the business grew.
Louisville filmmaker Ron Schildknecht made a documentary about the restaurant's final 24 hours of operation, titled "My Porcelain Past". In recording the restaurant's final day and night, Schildknecht and assistant director Keith Waits shot 45 minutes worth of film over a 24 hour period, that was later edited to a 20 minute show. The mood, Schildknecht says, was angry at first. "People were genuinely upset about what was happening. In the afternoon, things got a bit melancholy, with old friends coming to lunch together for the last time. Toward the end there was more of a party atmosphere." The final farewell gesture, as closing time approached, was a candlelight vigil.
Thousands of people came to bid a fond farewell to their old hangout. The restaurant's patrons had ranged from the homeless to the upwardly mobile, from school children to the elderly, from neighborhood residents to bus patrons from all over the city.
The site now has an oil change franchise and a small cluster of other stores. The cache is located near the street corner at what was the corner of the final White Castle building on the site.
