FRS Activated Prototype Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

GeoTravis: Power supply died and I dont have time to fix it - but, I will make the schematics available soon. Time to let someone have this cache location anyway that wants to put a working cache at the same spot. It was fun! For those of you who are Ham Radio types, it was made exactly as a "simplex repeater" except without the "repeating" part - only a "playback" part.

Geocache Description:

FRS Activated Prototype

This is a two-part cache. The first part is locating the 'Starting Spot'. The second part is going to the actual physical GeoCache by using the coordinates given in the secret FRS message.

IMPORTANT: You will need a Family Radio Service (FRS) radio with 'Privacy Code' capability to find this cache (along with your GPS). There is also a combination lock on the cache. You first locate the 'Starting Spot' at the coordinates provided. From the starting spot, activate the 'secret FRS message' by transmitting a signal (even simply hitting the 'call' button) on FRS channel #2 with privacy code #35. Once the FRS cache radio 'hears' someone transmitting on that channel and privacy code, after the channel is clear, it will respond by transmitting the secret FRS message. The secret FRS message contains the final coordinates of the physical GeoCache location.

At the Starting Location, there is a small round marker that says: 'www.GeoCaching.com' - 'START HERE - FRS GeoCache', Park on the dirt shoulder and not on the pavement.

As it turns out, you can be up to 2 miles away from the starting spot to activate the secret FRS message. The Starting Spot is just a good spot to park your car and a short walk to the actual GeoCache.

You can leave feedback in the GeoCache written log and/or by voice. Everything you transmit on FRS Channel #2 with Privacy Code #35 is stored on a recording inside the FRS Activated GeoCache. I will be reviewing the messages from time-to-time so you may leave detailed voice comments by FRS radio!

When you find the cache, you must unlock the combination lock that is keeping it shut. It is anchored down with a 2000lb aircraft cable. The combination is: 5, 19, 5. TO OPEN: Turn RIGHT (clockwise) three times and stop at the number 5. Turn LEFT (counter clockwise) one full turn passing the number 5 to stop at number 19. Again, turn RIGHT (clockwise) and stop at number 5. Pull shackle.

This is a 'Prototype' cache. Because of this, I first listed it under the subscription only caches. I have now taken this restriction off (for now). I need your feedback on how to make this cache better. Thanks for all the feedback from all of you so far! UPDATE: I will be making the schematic and program available at our home website: (visit link) / when I have finished learning the freeware CAD program gEDA at (visit link)

The cache location is nothing special except that it makes it easier for me to test and maintain.

I will make the circuit design available if this prototype is successful.

PS- Since your nearby, also stop by WAYMARK: (visit link)
