Geocache Description:

This cache is located near the famous fishing spot of Culloo Head on Valentia Island, Co. Kerry.

Warning:
While the immediate area of the cache is perfectly safe, Culloo Head and the "Whirlpool" itself are very dangerous, especially in strong winds and high seas. Please take note of the warning signs. This is not an area to bring children to.

Culloo Head is a famous fishing spot and during the summer you are likely to meet some anglers there, fishing from the rocks. The cache takes its name from the small inlet behind the rocks that is connected with the open sea via a narrow channel. In anything but very calm conditions this inlet is always in motion and looks like a giant whirlpool.

You can park at N51 54.526 W10 23.807. The path is obvious from there (climb the fence, cross the stream and head straight for the cache). The road to the parking spot used to be very bad, but was much improved in the summer of 2005 when the "Way to San Jose" Guinness ad was filmed here. It is OK to drive through the gate, but please follow the sign and close it after you should you find it closed. Sometimes the gate is open or not there at all.

Initial contents:
Disposable camera (please take a picture or two!)
CD of local artist Marion O’Neill
4 AA Batteries
Playing cards
Special German wine bottle opener
And some "Kinkerlitzchen" and "Firlefanz" for the German visitors!

If you have time and like another short walk, park your car here: N51 53.517 W10 23.804 and walk about 2 km uphill to Bray Tower at N51 53.151 W10 25.501. This look-out tower is one of many around the Irish coastline. The views from there and the walk are just out of this world. You can see the Dingle peninsula and the Blasket Islands to the north, the Skellig Islands are to the south-west and Dursey island to the south on the horizon. Enjoy!
