Geocache Description:

A traditional Orienteering course set up in the Gatineau park

This cache was originally set up for Tick & Nammie's 'Go and Get Em 3!!!' (GCG2YY) for the event on 6/7th July 2003. However now it is a regular permanent cache.

For this one you have to rely less on the GPS and more on traditional orienteering skills. It consists of 5 legs (including the ones to and from the car) with a total hike of only 2.8 km mostly on paths (unless you go off-course!).

There is a fragment of a map 'Kingsmere' and a legend to it 'Legend'. You should print these (preferably in colour) and take them with you on this trip. Note that the map orientation is magnetic North up as shown by the parallel lines which are 500m apart.

Parking is straightforward at the Kingsmere Estate (listed waypoint) N 47 29.074 W 75 50.752 which is on the large rectangle at the top and left of centre of the map, however it costs $8 in the summer. You could also park at N 45 28.835 W 75 50.868 which used to be free but is still $8 in the summer, its also more of a walk - it is on the map on the left hand side. For a truly free site a bit further up the road 'Mulvihill Lake' at N 45 29.041 W 75 51.388 is a good starting point, you can walk back down to the newly built road that goes into Kingsmere Estate.

At each waypoint of which there are three before the actual cache there is a small Jam Jar (see image) in which there is a copy of the same map but with the next point marked (please do not take it out of the bag to view). Note the map does not have a grid for use with a GPS. Mark the next point on your copy of the map and try to find the next Jam Jar. The object is to get accurately to the feature and then finding the Jam Jar should be not to difficult. I've placed pink flagging tape very close to the Jam Jars (though this tends to go after a few years!) and there are photos of each waypoint, refreshed in 2015 to help.

  • Waypoint 1 is under a prominent rock. Its position is marked on the map you have printed as 'first waypoint'
  • Waypoint 2 is at a tree base near to a prominent rock very close to an overgrown path.
  • Waypoint 3 is just in front of the base of a rock face, in a small rock pile
  • Waypoint 4 is on the West side of a prominent rock and is the Cache!

The cache is a standard large ammo container.

Please make sure that you close the cache lid carefully so that it does not leak and let me know if it needs maintenance. It and all the jam jars were last checked 17th Oct 2017.

The actual cache is not too far from the car park, so I've not left you at the other end of the Gatineau!
