If you're familiar with the classic film, 'The Great Escape', you'll be able to guess the type of locations you'll be visiting. In logging this multi-virtual-cache, you see three of the oldest examples of this type of civil engineering in the UK, if not the world.
The journey between these locations will take you through the heart of the former London Docks, an area rich in history and with numerous places of interest. To make a day of it - with slight detours and a little extra walking - you can take many different routes between these waypoints. If you wish to add variety, parts of the journey can made by river, bus, Docklands Light Railway, Underground - even a ferry - allowing you to take in the many sights along this stretch of the Thames. For railway enthusiasts, there is even a small but excellent railway museum just 300m from Tom! This is now closed as it has been squashed by CrossRail.
The coordinates above are for the point of access for the first waypoint. To decrypt the location above you will need to visit the locations below and find the answers to the following questions.
1. TOM - N 51 29.927 E 000 03.696 Make your descent and head south. Before the first set of cycle calming gates, there is a manhole cover. On it, to the right of the British Standards Institute kitemark symbol, there are 3 digits, 1 letter,3 digits (ABC D EFG). Use these to replace the letters in Dick's coordinates.
2. DICK - N 51 B(G+C).F05 W 000 0(A-E).GC5 Make your descent and head south. Marking the boundary between two London Boroughs (at right angles to the directions of travel at the waypoint), there is a white painted line on the footway - X is the number of manhole covers that this line bisects and Y is the number of large white painted letters on the ground, closest to the line. Use these to replace the letters in Harry's coordinates.
3. HARRY - N 51 (A+B)(B-F).X67 W000° 0(X+1).(X+1)(Y-1)2 When you arrive at this waypoint, remain at ground level. A gold-lettered stone plaque beyond the barrier in the lobby can be seen from the pavement.
For email confirmation of this virtual cache, mail me the first name of the father and of the son, the third and the last date on the plaque.
