Desert Station is an old way station on the Pony Express Trail.
THIS IS A REMOTE LOCATION!!!!! Take the proper precautions and carry the proper equipment and supplies.
Located mid-way between the Bucklands (future site of Fort Churchill) and Carson Sink way stations, Desert Station was active until August of 1861. At that time the route was moved further north along the current route of Hwy. 50. The way point N 39 16.597 W 119 2.684 can be accessed from the west by almost any car, under good conditions! In poor weather a 4 wheel drive is recommended. This is the actual site of Desert Station. Ruins of the stables, water tank and "strong" house can still be seen. A high clearance 2 wheel drive vehicle can make it the rest of the way to the actual cache if driven with care. Access from the east requires a high clearance 2 wheel drive vehicle under good conditions! I would not attempt an approach from the west during or immediately after rain or snowy conditions.
The cache is a 50 cal. ammo can cleverly painted to match the terrain. The initial cache contents were the finest the Dollar Tree had to offer. Please don't let it go down hill from there! (It's a short slope!) There were an assortment of toys, tools , and other items with something for everyone. Enjoy the ride and learn a little about one of the most famous chapters in western history.
