About 1000 years ago, vikings lived in the nordic countries. They traveled far and wide and practised trading. Unfortunately they also practised some warfare. Their journeys could last for several years, and quite often they did not come home at all, due to sickness or warfare. For those who did not return home or for those who had been especially brave, the family would erect stones with inscriptions, telling the story of the lost relative. Sometimes during their journeys they also raised stones to mark their visit, like "Kilroy was here". The inscriptions were made with runes, an ancient alphabet.
Task:
Find a rune stone and take a picture of it, and log your find here. An explanation of what the story on the stone says would be nice. The rune stone must not have been used in a previous log on this page. See my example.
These are the rules:
- One log per cacher.
- A rune stone can only be logged ONCE.
- The rune stone at the coordinates above is not valid.
- Include you and/or your GPS in the picture of the stone.
- State coordinates, name and country of the location.
- If there is an information sign, a picture of it would be nice too.
If the above is not fulfilled, you will be asked to supply the missing information, or change your log to a note. In worst case, the log will be deleted.
The inscription on my rune stone, Vs 9, which is located at Saltängsbron, Västerås, Västmanland, Sweden, says:
kisl × lit × kera × buru × eftR × osl × sun × sin × han u(a)[rþ] × tyþr × a eklati × kuþ ialbi × has × ont auk × selu
"Gisl had this bridge made in memory of Ösel, his son. He was killed in England. God help his spirit and soul."

För 1000 år sedan befolkades Norden av vikingar. De drog vida omkring på vikingatåg och idkade handel. Tyvärr idkades en del stridigheter också. Deras resor kunde vara i flera år, och det var inte ovanligt att en viking inte kom hem alls, utan dog i fjärran land av sjukdom eller krig. För dem som inte återvände kunde familjen hemma resa ett minnesmärke. Ibland ristade vikingar även stenar med runor på sina resmål, som ett "Kilroy was here".
Din uppgift:
Hitta en runsten, ta ett foto av den, och logga ditt fynd här. Det bör också finnas en förklaring till inskriptionen på stenen, se exemplet nedan. Runstenen får inte tidigare vara använd i en logg här på sidan.
Dessa regler gäller:
- En loggning per geocachare
- En runsten kan endast användas EN (1) gång.
- Runstenen vid koordinaterna ovan är inte giltig.
- Se till att du själv och/eller din GPS är med i bilden.
- Uppge koordinater, platsens namn och land (eller landskap) i loggen.
- Om det finns en informationstavla, så skulle en bild av den också vara trevligt.
Om ovanstående inte är uppfyllt, kommer vi be dig komplettera loggen eller ändra den till en "note", och om det inte sker, kommer vi att ta bort loggen.
