Geocache Description:

A muti-cache with 4 drive-by virtuals and a final traditional cache. Adopted from the original placers: StevesFamily. ( edited to note: I loved this cache because of it's uniqueness and was saddened to see that it had needed some love. The owner was nice enough to let me take over.)

This cache is a short tour of some of the historical houses in Salem County, New Jersey. All of these houses from the colonial era use vitrified brick (overcooked) in patterns on the houses. All of the houses on this tour have the year of construction as part of the pattern on the house. The first stop (posted coordinates) is the 7 Stars Tavern (now a private house). From the side of the road, you can see the date that the house was constructed in the pattern of the bricks. For the second stop, you will need the year that the 7 Stars Tavern was built. The second stop is at: N 39° A.236' W 75° 15.066' to fill in the 'A' above, take the last two digits of the year the 1st stop (7 Stars) was built, and subtract 24. The second stop is the Richman House, which is currently unoccupied. Hopefully someone will buy the house and save it before nature takes it's course. For the third stop, take the last 2 digits of the year the Richman House was built and subtract 45. Plug that answer into the coordinates below, substituting your number for the 'B' below: N 39° 38.548' W 75° B.817' At the third stop (a private house), the brick has been painted over, but the pattern has been highlighted in different paint. Take the year for this house, and subtract 19 from the last 2 digits, and subsitute for 'C' in the coordinates for the 4th stop. The fourth stop at: N 39° C.011' W 75° 20.019' is the Dickinson House (private house) It has some of the most ornate patterned brick in Salem County (maybe the US). You can get the year of construction from the house or from the roadside sign for the house. For the final stop, take the last two digits of the year the Dickinson House was built, and subtract 25. Substitute that number for 'D' in the coordinates below: N 39° 31.155' W 75° D.152' The final house is the Abel Nicholson house, and is located on land owned by PSEG and managed as a state Wildlife Management Area. There is a small parking area about 0.5 miles from the house; you will need to use the parking area (marked as 127 on the main road), and walk along the old driveway to get to the house. The house is not occupied, and hopefully PSEG will keep this important landmark in good shape for future generations.
