This cache is not for the inexperienced walker as it is hidden in a very remote position and it should not be attempted in poor weather conditions.Don`t forget that the weather in this area can change very quickly.
The cache is hidden very close to the entrance to the Chartist`s cave on Llangynidr moor and there are very few footpaths in the area. The location is approx. 2.25 miles west of the B4560 road which runs from Llangynidr to Beaufort and the area can be very bleak in poor weather. You will need good walking shoes , waterproofs, back-up compass etc. It would be very easy to wander around for hours without the proper navigational aids.
This may sound daunting but you will be rewarded with a visit to the Chartist`s cave which is extremely difficult to find. It is located at N51 49.728 W3 16.032. This cave was used by the Chartist`s Movement to store weapons and in 1839 they marched to Newport to take part in Britain`s last armed uprising against the government. It is easy to understand how easy it was to conceal weapons here as the cave entrance can easily be missed even if you are as close as 25ft away.
Having found the cache you may wish to carry on a short distance to the highpoint at N51 49.677 W3 16.396 from which you have excellent views of the Brecon Beacons.
You can navigate to the cache from one of the many lay-bys on the B4560.The car-park at N51 50.750 W3 13.510 is as good as any. There is a footpath most of the way if you can find it ( stick to the high-ground all the way).
The cache contains a box of chalks,eraser,highlighter,marker pen,stop-watch,insulation tape, egg-timer, and note-book and pen.
Should you get lost remember the B4560 runs N to S therefore by walking due East you will eventually meet the road.It will take approx. 45-60 mins to walk each way so allow plenty of time before the light begins to fail !
