Geocache Description:

Take a walk around the baroque castle of Eszterházy princes. The view of the castle from the park is a sight you should not miss when visiting North-western Hungary.

We are inviting you to the baroque Eszterházy castle in Fertõd. Construction of the castle began in 1720 and was finished by 1766. Most famous owner of the castle was Miklós Eszterházy, called "splendour-lover"or "luxurious"by his contemporaries. Not without a reason. The golden-yellow mini-Versailles included an opera house and puppet-theatre, both with permanent company; music house led by famous composer Joseph Haydn; separate houses for servants; beautiful horse-stalls for more than hundred steeds. The park is worth a visit in itself, too. The geometric pattern of flowerbeds is combined with huge trimmed yew trees. The deer-forest extends several acres. Unfortunately the Red Army and the local people robbed the castle during II. World War. Thus, when in 1957 reconstruction began, museologists could hardly find any original furniture. Despite of this the museum inside the castle is spectacular and helps you imagine what did the castle look like some 150-200 years ago. The cache box is hidden near the so-called Chinese house in the park.
