Geocache Description:

This earthen fort can be found in the county of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, in the south-west part of the village Szabolcs. The elevation of the ramparts can be easily seen even today.

Szabolcs is the biggest earthen fort in Hungary. Although it is not the typical medieval fort, it was used even in the middle ages. This type of fort was typical in the first centuries of the Hungarian state. According to Anonymous, the great chronicler, the fort was constructed at the time of the incoming of Hungarians by Szabolcs, who belonged to the clan of Csák. The first written memories are from 1067.
The whole county got its name from Szabolcs, probably the centre of the county was also here. Saint Laszlo organised the national assembly here in 1092. On top of the ramparts there were wooden walls and palisades. The fortification was huge (the remnants still are). The sides of the ramparts which form a triangle are 190, 270 and 320 meters long and are still more than 10m high. Of course only the earthworks can be seen today. At the époque the fort was surrounded by a moat.
The ramparts served as defence and not as habitation. The houses and the church were probably situated outside: a small church from the 11th century can still be seen near the fort.

Wap: a kisméretu kék láda az emlékoszlop fatalapzata alatt jól elrejtve lapul.

The small blue box is hidden under the wooden base of the memorial.

The nearby Tokaj hill is also well worth a visit. I wish everyone a great caching!
