Unique bridge, which dominates the skyline and was originally designed to allow tall ships to pass beneath. Opened in 1911 the central section of the bridge moves across the River Tees ferrying cars and pedestrians. This bridge was made famous in the TV show Auf Wiedersehen Pet. It shows the Transporter Bridge being disassembled and sent to Arizona in America. I thought it had better have a cache before it goes missing again!! There is a visitors centre and the web site (visit link) lists the times and fares if you want a trip.
(It does however, close occasionally due to strong winds and breakdowns.)
To claim this cache e-mail me with the information from the three plaques near the bridge. Two plaques commemorate the start of construction, what are the two names and the date associated with them. One plaque commemorates the opening, by whom, and when. If you find yourself on the wrong side of the river,and the bridge is closed,I will accept the usual pic with gps and 'bridge closed' sign. Try to include a picture of yourself on or near the bridge.
