The Temple of Confucius is the second largest Confucian temple in
China. Built in 1302 and periodically rebuilt and repaired in the
Ming and Qing dynasties, it reopened in 1981 after undergoing major
renovation to repair damage done during the Cultural Revolution.
In the courtyard of the temple stands a famous statue of
Confucius. The statue stands in the middle of a forest of 198 stone
tablets bearing the inscriptions of the name, rank and birthplace
of 51,624 scholars that passed the highest exam during the Yuan,
Ming and Qing dynasties.
