Geocache Description:

"The acquisition of Newfoundland will take its place, in strategic importance, with the acquisition by the United States of Alaska and Louisiana." - February 8, 1949, House of Commons.

The first of a series of caches related to Canada's Prime Ministers.

John George Diefenbaker was born on September 18, 1895 in Neustadt, Ontario to William and Mary (Bannerman). He was prime minister of Canada as a Progressive Conservative from June 21, 1957 to April 22, 1963. Although he spent less than six years as Prime Minister, he spent many years in the Opposition, keeping his opponents on their toes.

He was married twice, to Edna Brower, then after her death, Olive Palmer. He had no children.

When he died on August 16, 1979, according to his funeral plans his body was shipped from Ottawa to Saskatoon by train for burial. Thousands of Canadians lined the tracks to bid farewell to Dief.

To find the location of the cache, one needs to do a little research about Canada's 13th Prime Minister. The above co-ordinates will take you to the Diefenbunker which is an interesting piece of our cold war history (http://www.diefenbunker.ca). To find the co-ordinates of the cache, you will need to solve the following puzzle.

N 45 ab.cde

subsitute the letters for the numbers in the answers to the following:

The cache is hidden reasonably well. The area can be busy so please be discrete and cover the cache with branches, twigs, leaves, etc. This is child and dog friendly, and there are lots of nearby attractions for both winter and summer.

Enjoy!
