St. Mary's Church has two church yards, the upper churchyard and the lower churchyard. We have been clearing up both of these churchyards for just over a year now and the difference is really showing. There are always brambles, overgrown ivy and other weeds to clear up and you are more than welcome to get stuck in with this.
We are also starting a new project which is to clean and record what we can of the gravestones. Many of the stones are illegible and it will be our task to use water only and soft tooth brushes to gently clean away the dirt and moss etc from the stones and see if we can match the stone to the burial record/previous studies and to see if we can uncover the descriptions.
Please bring secateurs, scythes, loppers, buckets, toothbrushes, gloves with you and any other useful tools with you! There is still plenty to do if you do not have your own tools too.
There are toilets at the church we can use, and we can also shelter in the office should it rain.
