"On May 2, 2000, the U.S. government 'flipped the switch' and made accurate GPS available to all. Geocachers proudly call this day Blue Switch Day!"
-- Official Geocaching Blog, April 11, 2023
Geocaching as we know it would not exist without accurate GPS technology. The map applications on our smartphones rely on accurate GPS technology.
From the April 8, 2024, Official Geocaching Blog: "The advent of precise GPS technology brought a new era of possibilities, fostering innovation and exploration worldwide. It’s no coincidence that the very next day, on May 3, 2000, the first geocache was hidden, giving birth to the game of geocaching.
"Geocaching HQ created a souvenir for geocachers to celebrate Blue Switch Day 2024. To earn this souvenir, geocachers must find one geocache, Event Cache, or Adventure Lab® Location between May 2–5, 2024."
To celebrate Blue Switch Day, we'll be gathering at Union Street Market at Electric Works on Broadway in Fort Wayne on May 2 from 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. I'll be sitting at a table near the entrance. A surface parking lot is available off Swinney Avenue. There is some on-street handicap parking nearby.
