Kids can bring a nature photo or nature drawing/painting to display during the event. Bait and a limited number of fishing poles are provided. The Naturefest geocaching event will run from 11:30 AM until 12:30 PM and will include an FTF raffle for the 26 new caches to be published for the event.

Schedule for the day:

  •  11:30 am      Event check-in and socializing
  •  12:00 pm     Raffles for FTF's
  •  12:30 pm     New cache coordinates handed out, and enjoy the Naturefest.

Crosswinds Marsh is one of the largest man-made wetlands in the country.  It was built to replace the wetlands that were paved over to expand Wayne County's Detroit Metro Airport (the McNamara terminal).   Wayne County, together with Sumpter Township, purchased over 900 acres of farmland that, believe it or not, were once wetlands that had been converted into farm fields by draining the land in a process that took over a year.   They flooded former farm fields, planted new wetland plants, and transplanted endangered species from Metro Airport.  The area is managed by the Wayne County Parks.

The park has a brand-new restroom facility which was completed at the end of 2023!

If you are intending to hunt for the new caches, please come prepared with long pants, shoes, socks (not sandals or flip-flops), and insect repellent. This time of year in the woods of Southeastern Michigan there are ticks and mosquitoes a plenty!

What to bring:

GPSr and/or phone and gear bag
Lawn chairs (very limited # of picnic tables)
Lunch/Bottled Water/Beverages
Insect repellant

Be sure to keep an eye out for other upcoming geocaching events at Crosswinds Marsh.

  • Q:    Will there be a GPX file available for the new caches?
  • A:    Yup. A GPX file of the new caches will be available, and we will be loading GPS units with GSAK and making the file available via QR code at the event.  We will be willing to help people who have trouble the best we can but with no guarantees. Please remember that the file is offered as a convenience -- it is the cacher's responsibility to know how to import the file into their smartphone application. (From our experience, the classic Geocaching App does not support the importing of files.)

The Crosswinds Cache Crew pledges to develop and maintain quality and interesting geocaches in the Marsh consistent with Geocaching and Wayne County Parks rules and permit processes.
