BIG BLUE BREW SWITCH DAY 2024
Each day, hidden technologies around the world help shape our work, our play, and our futures. One such technology is GPS, or Global Positioning System technology, which revolutionised precise location information and enabled geocaching itself!
Prior to 2000, the U.S. military created and deployed satellites to produce accurate location information for military applications. Selective Availability restricted precise GPS data to the U.S. government. On 2nd May, 2000, the U.S. government “flipped the switch” and made accurate GPS available to all. Geocachers proudly call this day Blue Switch Day.
After the switch was flipped and GPS became available to the public, the first geocache didn’t take long to appear! Only one day later, the first geocache was hidden on 3rd May, 2000.
Geocaching was born!
So come along and celebrate BIG BLUE BREW SWITCH DAY with a Meet and Greet event in Sydney Park.
DATE: THURSDAY 2ND MAY 2024
VENUE: SYDNEY PARK, ST PETERS, NSW
TIME: 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
WHERE: Sydney Park, St Peters, NSW. Follow the path up the hill to "The Trail".
WHEN: 5PM - 6PM.
HOW: You can get to Sydney Park by train (St Peters station), bus, bicycle or car.
There are facilities in the park for all ages - playground, cycling, dog park, skatepark. There is so much open space to explore.
The park is dog friendly with a designated off leash area.
There are a few local caches nearby as well as some ALs that start here if you haven't been here before.
You can stay as long as you like. Afterwards we might adjourn to a nearby pub for dinner if you're keen.
You might even want to watch the sun set over Sydney from this high location!
And of course you will be able to collect your BIG BLUE SWITCH DAY souvenir by attending.
