O Geocaching foi concebido logo após a remoção da Disponibilidade Seletiva do "Global Positioning System" em 2 de maio de 2000 (Blue Switch Day), que permitiu a qualquer pessoa a utilização de coordenadas GPS através de equipamentos próprios e sem restrição para descoberta e esconderijo das caches.

Geocaching was conceived shortly after the removal of Selective Availability from the "Global Positioning System" on May 2, 2000 (Blue Switch Day), which allowed anyone to use GPS coordinates through their own equipment and without restriction for discovery and hiding caches.
