Tessellation Day

What do you get on Tessellation Day

Why do we go to The Swan in Bromham, again!

Tessellation or tiling is the covering of a surface, often a plane, using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps. In mathematics, tessellation can be generalized to higher dimensions and a variety of geometries.

Tessellation Day is a vibrant celebration of the beauty and intricacies of tessellations, observed annually on June 17th.

The day offers a fantastic opportunity for people of all ages to dive into the fascinating world where art meets mathematics. Tessellations, patterns that repeat without overlapping or leaving gaps, can be seen everywhere – from historic architecture to modern digital graphics.

Why is World Tessellation Day on June 17th, which is the birthday of M.C. Escher, the Dutch graphic designer and artist famous for making all of those compelling tessellation works, despite there being evidence that this was form of decoration was known about in Sumerian Times 6000 years ago.

They following will be available at the event

1) An Event Log to sign, if you want, see below for details about this unique log

2) The opportunity to swan in,swap and discover Travel Bugs, take away a big one, please

3) The chance that another cacher might nudge you to solve a mystery cache

4) Somewhere to Sit, chat, drink and have foor if required

The event log will consist of a shape that can be tessellated, a Hexagon, i will provide the an individual one for all those saying they will attend. If you want to pre-draw / superimpose youe Caching Icon on one and brong to the event that would be great - if you do then make it from a circle that has diameter of 150mm / 15cm. if you a daunted by the idea then see below

Creating a Hexagon from a 150mm Diameter circle

Things needed - A4 Paper, Compasses, Pencil, Ruler and Siscors

Method

1) Choose a surface that will not be damaged when the compass point stabs the paper

2) Measure 75mm between the sharp point and the pencil lead

3) Draw your circle centrally on the A4 paper

4) Put the Sharp point on the marked circle and spin the pencil lead rounr to mark the two points where the marked circle is crossed

5) Move the sharp point ro one of the "X" marks and spin the pencil so it marks two more intersectons witht he original line, one being where the point was originally placed on the starting circle

6) Now move the sharp point to the newest intersection point and mark the 5th "X" on the circle

7) Place the sharp point on the 5th "X" and mark the 6th and final point on the circle

8) With the Pencil and ruler join the circle of "X" with six line resulting in the Hexagon

9) Colour in the Hex or Sign your caching name in it and bring it along to create a tessellated wall mural
