Geocache Description:

08 April 2024, 14:30 - 15:30

It's 2024 and this year we will be treated to a Great American Total Solar Eclipse! For us it will be a Partial eclipse but still how often do we get to see that? Let's gather to watch the eclipse and of course talk about Geocaching, exchange TBs, and other fun Geocaching nonsense. As you well know there are plenty of caches in the park for fun before or after the event.

The event will run from 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm EST feel free to come or go at any point. The maximum portion of the eclipse should happen around 3:08 pm EST. See https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/usa/savannah?iso=20240408 for more details on when to view!

  • 1:50 PM Partial eclipse begins The moment the edge of the Moon touches the edge of the Sun is called first contact.
  • 1:52 PM Moon bites Sun Using eclipse glasses, the eclipse starts to become visible to the eye.
  • 2:15 PM Obscuration around 20% One-fifth of the area of the Sun’s disk is covered by the Moon
  • 2:24 PM Temperature changes As the Moon covers the Sun, the amount of solar energy decreases.
  • 2:33 PM Sharp & blurry shadows Shadow edges that are aligned with the Sun’s narrowing crescent become sharper.
  • 2:54 PM Temperature, humidity & wind Conditions continue to change as the amount of solar energy decreases.
  • 3:08:15 PM Maximum eclipse The deepest point of the eclipse, with the Sun at its most hidden.
  • 3:21 PM Light levels & temperature The conditions of the sky and surroundings are returning to normal.
  • 3:59 PM Obscuration around 20% One-fifth of the area of the Sun’s disk is covered by the Moon
  • 4:22 PM Partial eclipse ends The edge of the Moon leaves the edge of the Sun.

I picked this spot because it's wide open without any trees or cover in the way. Bring a chair or blanket, if you desire, there are not any in this area. There are bathrooms and plenty of parking.

Very Important! Looking at the solar eclipse with your naked eyes, even when it is partially covered by the moon, is VERY dangerous and can cause serious eye damage. This is also true for pets, please keep them at home for this one to keep their eyes safe too.  I will have 9 approved "ISO 12312-2" certified eyeglasses that can be used to safely view the eclipse. If you would like more details about this check out this page here: A Solar Eclipse Can Blind You or How to View a Solar Eclipse Without Damaging Your Eyes. I encourage you to bring your own viewer, but please note that regular sunglasses are NOT sufficient, and refer to the links above for proper devices.

In attending the event and viewing the eclipse, please use common sense. Neither Geocaching.com, the reviewer, nor I can be held accountable for any side effects of viewing the eclipse improperly or otherwise. Not trying to scare anyone away, just want you to be aware.

See ya there!
