Geocache Description:

08 April 2024, 15:00 - 16:00

Celebrate this rare event from 3:00 - 4:00 pm on April 8 and get a smiley while you're at it.

Come view the solar eclipse with us at the I-86 Overlook.  Coordinates are for just inside the building in case the weather doesn't cooperate, but we will be outside nearby to see it get dark in the middle of the afternoon.  I'll try to grab a picnic table and set up a banner to make us easy to find.  The eclipse begins around 2pm, totality is around 3:39 pm, and the whole shebang is over by 4:30.

What to expect:  During the totality, the moon will cover 100% of the sun, resulting in what past observers have described as a surreal, primeval, even hair-raising experience.  Streetlights will snap on midday. Some birds will flock. Some dogs will howl. (bring your dog and we'll find out.)  Totality, is the only time we on Earth can see the corona, which streams out into space above the Sun's surface. Normally, the corona's delicate light is outshone by the bright photosphere. You may see bright pink spots at the Sun's edges.

Logistics: Expect high volumes of traffic and visitors, the D.O.T will be directing traffic at the rest stop and parking may be tight at this great viewing location.  So plan on coming a bit early and enjoying the show.
