Date and Time: April 6, 2024; 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM

CITO Season 1: March 1-May 31

The Details:

This CITO event will take place in conjunction with the Adopt-a-Highway program managed by Keep Aiken County Beautiful (KACB), Palmetto Pride, and the SC Department of Transportation (SC DOT) I have adopted the portion of State Park Road from Salley/Wagener Road to Aiken State Park. I am inviting all interested geocachers to help with the effort!

Here are a few basic guidelines that must be followed per SC DOT:

  • All participants must wear a safety vest.
  • Due to the nature of the cleanup, SC DOT requires that all participants are at least 13 years old and an adult must accompany all participants under 18 (we can find alternate areas such as the boat ramp for the children).
  • SC DOT does not allow road cleanup in bad weather; therefore, I will be watching the weather and informing potential participants about any cancelations.

KACB reminders:

  • Work only during daylight hours.
  • Do not conduct litter cleanup during extreme weather or a declared state of emergency.
  • Please leave pets at home.
  • Avoid high-traffic areas, especially during times of high traffic.
  • While working on the right-of-way, face oncoming traffic and stay as far away from the road as possible.
  • Work in teams.
  • Wear substantial footwear. Shoes or boots that are thick-soled and close-toed are preferable.
  • Wear appropriate clothing for the weather and clothing that protects one from potential hazards. SC DOT recommends long pants and long sleeve shirts.
  • Wear gloves while handling litter.
  • Wear sunscreen and insect repellent.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Watch for snakes, bees, ants, traffic, etc.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Do not try to move heavy or large objects.
  • Wash your hands after working.
  • Do not pick up hazardous waste materials such as gas cans, car batteries, oil cans, antifreeze containers, needles and syringes, chemical containers, dead animals; and unidentifiable, dented, or leaking containers.

What's included:

  • Bottled water
  • Orange Adopt-a-Highway trash bags
  • Safety vests
  • Gloves
  • Trash pickers
  • First Aid kit
  • Hand sanitizer

What you should bring:

  • Proper attire for trash cleanup (consider the weather, the potential for scrapes, and poisonous plants; SC DOT recommends long pants, long sleeves, and sturdy shoes).
