Geocache Description:

08 April 2024, 12:30 - 13:00

When: Monday, Apr 8, 2024 from 12:30pm to 1:00pm.

What: (Safely) view the 2024 Solar Eclipse (or at least part of it!) with a bunch of C.A.C.H.E.rs (Camrose & Area Cache Hunting Enthusiasts)

Where: Just outside of the Camrose City Hall, located at 5204 - 50 Ave.  We will be meeting at the park bench located just outside of the Council entrance, at the east side of the building.

Why: Because a solar eclipse like this doesn't happen everyday!

The total solar eclipse of 2024 is a remarkable celestial event that will captivate countless spectators across North America. Here are the key details:

  • Date: On April 8, 2024, this spectacular event will unfold.
  • Path: The eclipse’s path of totality will pass over Mexico, the United States, and parts of eastern Canada.  Unfortunately for those of us in Alberta, we will be a long way away from the path of totality.
  • Phenomenon: During a total solar eclipse, the Moon aligns perfectly between Earth and the Sun, completely blocking the face of the Sun.  For central Alberta, it will only be a partial solar eclipse, as only about 25% of the sun will be blocked.  But that doesn't mean that we can't have a geocaching event to take in as much of the eclipse as we can!

The event will be very simple in its set-up:  bring a bag lunch to the posted coordinates on the date and time listed, and eat your lunch with other C.A.C.H.E.rs that are there.  "J" has a homemade pinhole camera, which we can use to safely look at an inverted image of the moon blocking the sun.  For central Alberta, the moon will start to cover a portion of the sun at just before noon, and it will all be over by around 1:45pm.  We've chosen the time of this event as this will be when the moon is covering the largest portion of the sun's disc.

In addition to veiwing the partial solar eclipse, it will be a great time of catching up with other cachers and exchanging stories. Don't forget to bring your Trackables too, as events such as these are usually great times of trading and discovering TBs.

Please note that everyone is invited to attend this event, even if you aren't from anywhere close to the Camrose area. Over the past few years, we've had cachers join us for these "bring your own lunch" from as far away as Edmonton and even Calgary!

There will be a log book present at the event for cachers to sign.  Hope to see you all there!!
