O Dia do Trabalho é um dia internacional de comemoração dos trabalhadores, comemorado anualmente no dia 1º de maio em quase todos os países do mundo e é feriado em muitos deles. A homenagem remonta a 1º de maio de 1886, quando teve início uma greve na cidade norte-americana de Chicago com o objetivo de conseguir melhores condições de trabalho, principalmente a redução da jornada diária de trabalho, que era de 17 horas, para 8 horas. Confrontos com a polícia ocorreram durante a manifestação, resultando em prisões e mortes de trabalhadores. Este evento serviria de inspiração para muitas outras manifestações que se seguiriam. Estas lutas dos trabalhadores culminaram num conjunto de direitos consagrados na lei e sancionados na constituição.

Em Portugal, o 1º de Maio só voltou a ser comemorado livremente e foi declarado feriado a partir de Maio de 1974, após a Revolução dos Cravos. Durante a ditadura do Estado Novo, a celebração foi reprimida pela polícia. O Dia do Trabalho é comemorado em todo o país com manifestações, comícios e festas de cunho sofisticado. No Algarve, assim como na Madeira e nos Açores, é comum a população fazer piqueniques e são organizadas algumas festas para comemorar esta data.

Labor Day is an international day of commemoration for workers, celebrated annually on May 1 in almost all countries in the world and is a public holiday in many of them. The homage dates back to May 1, 1886, when a strike began in the North American city of Chicago with the aim of achieving better working conditions, especially the shortening of the daily working day, which was 17 hours, to 8 hours. Clashes with police occurred during the demonstration, resulting in arrests and deaths of workers. This event would serve as inspiration for many other demonstrations that would follow. These workers' struggles culminated in a set of rights enshrined in law and sanctioned in the constitution.

In Portugal, May 1st was only freely celebrated again and declared a public holiday from May 1974, after the Carnation Revolution. During the Estado Novo dictatorship, the celebration was suppressed by the police. Labor Day is celebrated across the country with demonstrations, rallies and parties of a sophisticated nature. In the Algarve, as well as Madeira and the Azores, it is common for the population to have picnics and some parties are organized to commemorate this date.

Der Tag der Arbeit ist ein internationaler Gedenktag für Arbeitnehmer, der in fast allen Ländern der Welt jährlich am 1. Mai gefeiert wird und in vielen von ihnen ein gesetzlicher Feiertag ist. Die Hommage geht auf den 1. Mai 1886 zurück, als in der nordamerikanischen Stadt Chicago ein Streik begann mit dem Ziel, bessere Arbeitsbedingungen zu erreichen, vor allem die Verkürzung des täglichen Arbeitstages, der 17 Stunden betrug, auf 8 Stunden. Während der Demonstration kam es zu Zusammenstößen mit der Polizei, bei denen es zu Festnahmen und Todesfällen von Arbeitern kam.
