Vande Luyster Square
The village of Zeeland was founded when a group of people left the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands and came to the United States. This group was led by Jannes Vande Luyster and Rev. Cornelius Vander Meulen. This park was set aside as a public square, where the people of this new village could gather together.
The square was used for all sorts of civic events. There was a weekly market held here for many years. The Zeeland City Band would play concerts throughout the summer, with many people coming to enjoy the music. That tradition of community events has continued on to the present. When Zeeland celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2022, Church Street was closed down, and Vande Luyster Square was packed full of people eating food, listening to stories, and enjoying time as a community. The Square continues to be a draw. During certain times of the year a Peddler's Market is held on Church Street and in the Square. The library holds many summer events here including reading events for kids, a pet show, and a magician.
Vande Luyster Square was created for the people of Zeeland. In that spirit, I'm inviting anyone who wants to come to Vande Luyster Square to enjoy a nice evening in the heart of Zeeland.
