DARK SIDE OF THE MOON

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will occur in which the moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun. The line of totality will pass through Upstate New York during this time and the duration of totality will last for about three and a half minutes. This is the final time a total solar eclipse will be seen in the contiguous United States for almost twenty years.

How to watch the solar eclipse safely:

The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers. Ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the Sun; they transmit far more sunlight than is safe for our eyes. Read more at the link above.

Join me at McIntyre Bluff off Lake Ontario in the town of Sterling for an unforgettable experience viewing the eclipse. I've picked out this spot for the event because I think the area is beyond beautiful and the duration of totality in this area should be a little bit longer than towards Syracuse itself. If you've never been to McIntyre Bluff, there is at least one traditional cache that is still active, along with a great Earthcache as well.

In the town of Sterling, partial totality will last from about 2:08PM until 4:34PM, with full totality occuring between about 3:21PM and 3:25PM.

Unfortunately, eclipse glasses will NOT be provided, so please be sure to bring your own, along with anything else you might need!

We'll meet at the parking coords and likely head towards the posted coords where we'll figure out where the best viewing point will be. I'm hoping to place at least one cache in the area as part of the celebration, but only time will tell I suppose.

Hope to see y'all there!
