Join us at the West Field Parking Lot in Bowen Park (North end of the park) at 10:00 AM, Saturday, March 30, 2024 for another CITO in this area. It involves promoting and protecting trees to restore the natural habitat of this flood plain close to the Millstone River. Tree and shrub plantings are being used to shade reed canary grass and restrict its growth. Doing so allows for more native plants to re-establish next to the salmon bearing Millstone River in the heart of Nanaimo. We held a similar CITO here nearly 3 years ago to put up fencing, landscaping fabric and removed some fencing on a few well established willows. That was a mistake! Some how the beavers found the exposed ones and cut them down. This is a learning experience so your ideas and suggestions are welcome. Shovels, hoes, shear clippers, (grass removal tools) pliers, scissors, garbage tongs etc. would be handy but many of these will be supplied.
