Florida has not yet adopted this Day as a Holiday but lets not give up hope on that. So lets get together anyway to drink a nice hot beverage and talk about geocaching and possibly the SHOT HEARD AROUND THE WORLD.
PATRIOTS DAY
The holiday was originally celebrated on April 19, the actual anniversary of the battles (fought in 1775). Since 1969, it has been observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusates and in Maine (which until the Missouri Comprimise of 1820 was part of Massachusetts).
In 1894, the Lexington Historical Society petitioned the Massachusets General Court to proclaim April 19 as "Lexington Day". Concord countered with "Concord Day". However, the biggest battle fought on this day was in the town of Menotomy—now Arlington Massachusetts—on the Concord Road between Lexington and Boston. So the then Governor opted for a compromise: Patriots' Day.
In the area around Lexington and Concord, re-enactments of the battles in 1775 and the events leading up to them are held. A particular highlight is the opportunity to ring the bell that warned the local troops that British soldiers were approaching. Lectures, concerts and road races are also organized.
Paul Revere is among the patriots who are remembered on Patriots' Day. The American silversmith is known for spreading the word of the Boston Tea Party to New York and Philadelphia, and for warning the Lexington Minutemen about the British invasion in 1775. The story of his “midnight” ride to Lexington to discuss action plans against the British has been poeticized.
