Geocache Description:

02 April 2024, 13:15 - 14:15

Just as our forests are considered to be the lungs of the world, wetlands are the kidneys. As with kidneys, wetlands need to be flushed out every now and then (by flooding rain) to freshen them up. We will help this process by cleaning up any man made waste along the wetland trails.

Please bring a rubbish bag and remember to be sun safe.

Located in the Townsville suburb of Rowes Bay the wetlands were once part of a continuous system of wetlands, sand dunes and coastal flats that stretched from Kissing Point to Pallarenda and across to the Bohle River including the full extent of the Town Common.

The Rowes Bay Wetlands Boardwalk, also known as the Sand Island Tracks or the Coastal Dune Trails, was established in 2012 and consists of a vegetated sand island and a surrounding low lying salt flat, which is seasonally a shallow freshwater wetland. The sand island is vegetated with diverse woodland and is a habitat for large species of Burdekin plum (Pleiogynium timorense) and red condoo or Spanish cherry (Mimusops elengi).
