Geocache Description:

08 April 2024, 14:00 - 17:00

Welcome to the Finger Lakes,

where nature's wonders never cease to amaze!

We are thrilled to announce the highly anticipated

celestial event of 2024:

The Total Solar Eclipse.

On April 8, 2024, the skies will darken as the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, casting a spell-binding shadow across our region. This rare phenomenon offers a unique opportunity to witness the awe-inspiring dance of the cosmos. Not only is the Finger Lakes region an ideal destination for experiencing the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse, but it also holds the distinction of being directly in the path of totality. This remarkable alignment is an exceptionally rare occurrence, as the path of totality is typically narrow and spans only a small portion of the Earth's surface.

While the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse will darken the skies from Texas to Maine, Livingston County, New York is in line for a "Total Solar Eclipse". The duration of totality will be up to 4 minutes and 27 seconds, almost double that of the Great American Eclipse of August 21, 2007, which was witnessed from Oregon to South Carolina.

Many towns and villages in Livingston County and surrounding areas are going to be in the "path of Totality" meaning they will be in the area where the moon will completely block the sun. In Avon, the Eclipse will take place from 2:06 to 4:33 p.m. EST, while the total solar eclipse will be visable from 3:20:04 p.m. to 3:23:04 p.m.

How to watch the solar eclipse safely:

The only safe way to look directly at the sun during an eclipse is through special-purpose solar filters, like ISO certified eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers. Remember the only safe time to look at the sun without solar filters is during the 2 to 4 minutes of total eclipse. These specialized glasses block harmful rays and allow you to see the eclipse without any risk to your eyes. We have purchased a very small quantity of solar glasses to be given out on a "first come, first serve" basis. You can order your specialized glasses from the Livingston County Tourism or elsewhere ahead of time.

We have reserved at the North pavilion in the Avon Driving Park from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. There is plenty of parking nearby. Restrooms may or may not be available nearby, depending on the weather conditions and the Park regulations. Some snacks will be provided but you are encouraged to bring along anything you like as far as drinks (a.k.a.- hot chocolate, coffee, tea, pop) and other snacks are always welcome. There will also be a raffle held and a group picture taken right after the end of totality.
