Geocache Description:

BYOP

Most bats are cute mammals that eat a variety of foods depending on the species.  Some tropical bats eat nectar and help pollinate desert plants, bananas and other fruits.  It is claimed that more than 70% of the fruit at the market is pollinated by bats.

All of the bats in Minnesota are strictly insectivores – eating their body weight in insects each night (that’s up to 1,500 mosquitoes each night).  Yeah!  Austin, TX is famous for the bats that live beneath the Congress Avenue Bridge, which consume an estimated 30,000 pounds of insects each night.  However, the Bracken Cave, on the outskirts of San Antonio, is the home to the world’s largest bat colony, which is estimated to consume over 100 tons of bugs every summer night.

However, in the fall, everyone thinks of the blood-sucking bat made famous by Bram Stoker.  A sub-family of leaf-nosed bats, these cuties feed primarily on the blood of mammals (occasionally including humans).  However, rather than actually sucking, they take about a ¼” bite with their razor-sharp teeth and only lap up about an ounce of the blood.

Since it’s estimated that less than 1/10 of 1 percent of bats carry the rabies virus, it’s extraordinarily rare for anyone to contract the disease from a bat.  It has been claimed that people are 600-times more likely to die falling out of bed than they are to get rabies from a bat.

As winter drives the insects away, Minnesota bats either hibernate or migrate.  Hibernating bats typically choose caves, mines, rock crevices, and other structures (called hibernacula) to hang out.  Most species that roost in trees migrate south for the winter; however, this one doesn’t migrate.  And just like at Christmas, when Santa placed this cache he remembered the battrees.
