Geocache Description:

Church Micro 12666...Balsham

Holy Trinity Church is situated in the centre of Balsham village and is a Grade 1 listed building. The churchyard covers about four and a half acres and includes a graveyard and war memorial. A village footpath passes through the churchyard. The church tower is the oldest part of the building, built around 1250 although a Saxon grave cover and the base of an ancient cross were excavated in the 1930s. The tower has had frequent buttress additions from the 13th century onwards. In 1986 a concrete sleeve and a steel ring were added to ensure it would hold together. The church bells have also been rehung replacing the old wooden frame with a steel one. This allowed them to be rung once more after many years of silence. The chancel dates from about 1300 and the present nave was built around the mid 14th Century. Large well preserved medieval brasses to both Hugh de Balsham and John Sleford are present in the chancel. The vestries were added in the 19th century replacing a former schoolroom. Further alterations were made to the church in early 20th century including stain glass windows and an imposing font cover, carved in the late 1920’s by the then Rector, Edwin Burrell.

This is a traditional cache and IS at the published coordinates.

The cache is a 30ml tube.
