Geocache Description:

"Under the Bridge" is a song by American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers and the eleventh track on their fifth studio album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991)

There are broadly 7 main types of bridges : Arch, Beam, Cable-stayed, Cantilever, Suspension, Truss and Tied Arch. The way in which the vertical/horizontal stresses are managed dictates the structure of different bridges.

And of course there is the geocaching “Little Bridge”. Can you find the names of these famous bridges and fill in the crossword grid?

1. Iconic bridge over the River Avon & gorge built by IKB. (First word)

2. A cantilever bridge in east Scotland, not too far from central Edinburgh. It’s a Unesco World Heritage Site.

3. A through-arch bridge linking Newcastle to Gateshead.

4. A pedestrian bridge in London that is symbolic of an exciting moment at the turn of this century.

5. A bridge in a nearby city that was designed by Robert Adam with shops built

into its structure.

6. Unique pedestrian and cycle footbridge in Stockton-on-Tees.

7. An arch bridge in Shropshire crossing the River Severn. The first to be made of this material, it opened in 1871.

8. A 17-span “clapper” bridge that crosses the River Barle in Exmoor National Park. It’s the longest of its kind in Britain. (2 words)

9. Grade I-listed bascule and suspension bridge, a famous London landmark not to be confused with London Bridge.

10. A bridge that connects New Court at Cambridge University with St John’s Third Court. Widely considered the city’s main tourist attraction.

11. A suspension bridge that links Isle of Anglesey to the mainland.

12. Pedestrian bascule bridge in central Bristol with pair of horn-shaped sculptures.

To find the co-ordinates you need the alphabetical numbers of certain letters in the grid.

A=1, B=2, C=3 ….. Z=26 etc.

Eg. If the answer to the Clue number 1 was "Bristol", I would ask you to find 1/5th which would be the letter ‘T'. Letter T = 20 in the alphabet.

N51 20. (1/7th – 4/2nd) (2/4th – 5/3rd) (3/3rd – 6/3rd)

W002 29. (7/1st – 8/2nd) (9/3rd – 10/5th) (11/2nd – 12/2nd)

You can checker your answer in Certitude.

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.

The Little Bridges series was started by Stanthews in 2009 to highlight small footbridges in remote parts of Wiltshire. Since then, the series has been expanded by others all over the country and starting to spread fast. There is a stats listing, so you can see how many Little Bridges you have found, you can find it here: - Little Bridges Geocaching Series (littlebridgesseries.co.uk). If you would like to add to the series, please go to this site, on the tab Get Involved click number request and fill in the form. To qualify, the bridge must be a foot bridge too small for vehicles, please make sure your title exactly matches “Little Bridges # xxxx then the name” including spaces so it will get picked up and added to stats list.
