Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Winsham and Cricket St. Thomas War Memorial, which has been Grade II listed since 2001.

Architecture

Erected in 1923 to commemorate the local deceased as a result of the First World War, the monument is made of Ham Hill stone ashlar.  It is designed in the form of a large pier with a semi-circular head with an integral Latin cross, the head of which is in the from a Crown of Thorns.  It has a stepped and octagonal base which is mounted on a large circular platform, independent with steps at the front.

Building of the War Memorial

The cost was covered by public subscription of £150 (which is around £12,000 now), with the site at the entrance of the village being donated by Mr Ward Coleridge, and part of his garden by Mr T Spurdle.  The builder, a Mr Lee, agreed to erect the memorial itself without profit, and the architect was a Mr Streatfield.

Unveiling Ceremony

The war memorial was unveiled on 11 Nov 1923 and was attended by the parishioners of both Winsham and Cricket St. Thomas, visitors from Chard, The Winsham Coronation Band, children the village school, the Girl Guides, the British Legion, the War Memorial Committee and the minster Rev. W. Williams, all of whom formed a procession and walked from outside the parish church to the site of the memorial.  Two hymns were sung, "Fight the good fight" and "O' God our help in ages past", after which the vicar conducted a short dedication service.
