Geocache Description:

Known as the The Men of Crewkerne, this First World War (1914 to 1918) memorial has been a Grade II listed building since 2009.  It's base comprises of two deep, octagonal steps, on top of which are large blocks of stone resembling a megalithic tomb, which is crowned by a capstone carrying the carved figure of a standing infantryman "Tommy".

The memorial, unusually, comprises of several elements, including two entrance stone pillars to the avenue of horse chestnut trees which the figure gazes down.  These were meant to be an arch, but this was never realised and the statue and pillars are both in need of some restoration.

However, upon one of the pillars is a blue plaque placed in the 'Milennium Year' by the 'Crewkerne Civic Society' which reveals another piece of history to this area, and reads as follows:

Severalls Park

These stone piers mark the entrance to one of the earliest council estates in the country.  Promising a better future, the housing and recreation grounds were designed as a memorial to the 131 Crewkerne men killed in the First World War.

So, although the 'garden suburn of modern housing' envisaged by Hubert Worthington was never fully realised, Crewkerne became one of the first places to provide Local Authority Housing and you are currently standing in it!

When I placed this cache I took a moment to also wonder through the garden area behind the statue and it was pleasant to view the trappings of an engaging community, including a child's 'den', insect house, as well as statues and decorations associated with the 2023 Coronation of King Charles III.  Perhaps Worthington's plans may have come true in a way after all ....

Multi-Cache Instructions

1) The blue plaque (see above) mentions that the war memorial commemorates 131 men, however, there is a different figure listed on war memorial itself - ABC.

2) Use these figures to work out the following co-ordinates:

N 50° 52.C(A*4) B, W 002° 47.(C+1)0(B*2)

3) Now go find the cache.  You are looking for a camo covered film cannister.
