L'Orto Botanico di Catania nasce nel 1858 grazie al monaco benedettino Fracesco Tornabene. Fino ad all'ora, l'Università di Catania non possedeva un giardino botanico in cui studiare le piante. Fu scelto questa zona della città perchè situata fuori dalle mura della città, al Borgo. (Trova la cache "This is Borgo" per maggiori info).
Al suo interno furono introdotte piante dalla Svezia, Francia e Italia ma solo successivamente furono introdotte solo specie autoctone della siciliana, grazie ad un lascito di un cittadino.
Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, l'Orto Botanico fu distrutto dai bombardamenti e occupato dagli alleati. Gran parte degli edicifi e piante furono distrutti e finì in decadenza.
All'interno sono presenti i viali che conducono alle diverse aree tematiche: piante succulente, palme, alberi, specie esotiche, endemismi siculi.
Il Tepidarium (grande serra) fu voluta proprio da Francesco Tornabene. Purtroppo quella attuale è una ricostruzione, l'originale fu distrutto nel 1958 nel periodo postbellico.
Oggi è possibile visitare l'Orto Botanico dal lunedì al venerdì dalle 9:30 - 18:30 e il sabato dalle 9:30 - 12:30.
La domenica è chiuso.

Catania's Botanic Gardens was born in 1858 thanks to Benedictine monk Francesco Tornabene. Until this moment, the University of Catania doesn't have any Botanic Gardens where it was possible to study plants. This area of the city was chosen because was outside the city wall, in the Borgo. Inside were brought plants from Sweden, France and Italy, but after there were only autochthonous Sicilian plants and flowers. During the Second World War, this place was destroyed by the bombardments. All the buildings and plants were destroyed.
Inside there are avenues that lead to different thematic areas: succulent plants, palms, trees, exotic species, and Sicilian endemisms.
The Tepidarium (large greenhouse) was commissioned by Francesco Tornabene. Unfortunately, the current one is a reconstruction, the original was destroyed in 1958 in the post-war period.
Today you can visit the Botanical Garden from Monday to Friday from 9:30 - 18:30 and Saturday from 9:30 - 12:30. Sunday is closed.
