Ilkeston’s large and imposing cenotaph is placed at the focal point within the town, on the Market Place in front of the parish church. Over 600 names are recorded on the memorial from the two world wars of the twentieth century.
The memorial was designed by an Ilkeston architect, H Tatham Sudbury, and constructed from sandstone by a Nottingham builder. Its unveiling, on 8 January 1922, was attended by the Ilkeston M.P., Major General J.E.B. Seely, who had been the Minister for War prior to WW1.
This is a mystery cache – there is nothing to be found at the published location, but you can find all the information by completing a 150 piece jigsaw and then checking a couple of things at the memorial itself.
To complete the jigsaw, click on the photo below. When you have finished the jigsaw, you will be given two numbers, N and W.
The cache is only a few minutes’ walk away, and can be found at: N52 58.xxx W001 18.yyy, where:
xxx = N multiplied by the number of times the name Henshaw appears on the west face of the memorial
yyy = W multiplied by the number of names recorded on the north face of the memorial (those killed in other conflicts)
If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Just-Us-Two know first at justustwo1013@gmail.com so they can keep track of the memorial numbers and names to avoid any duplication.
***** PLEASE NOTE IMPORTANT ***** CACHES ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE PLACED ON ACTUAL MEMORIALS OR WITHIN THE BOUNDARY OF SUCH. AT ALL TIMES PLEASE TREAT LOCATIONS OF MEMORIALS WITH RESPECT
