Geocache Description:

The main war memorial of Ilkeston stands in the Market Place, in front of the library. Commemorating the sacrifice of men of the town in the first and second world war, the cenotaph is the focus of events such as the annual Remembrance Day parade and wreath laying.

A much less well known memorial though can be found here, a plaque to the right of the front entrance to Ilkeston Town Hall. This pays tribute to the Ilkeston men, over 100 of them, who fought in the South African War, and particularly commemorates the three men who gave their lives there.

This is a multi cache – there is nothing to be found at the published location, but you can find all the information you need by looking at the plaque and at other things in the immediate vicinity The cache is only a few minutes’ walk away, and can be found at: N52 58.ABC W001 18.XYZ, where:

A = the date in January when Private Goldsmith was killed
B = the final digit of a number on the town hall wall, about 7 feet up and 15 feet to the right of the plaque

C = the third digit of the number of Sherwood Foresters killed in WW2 (on plaque on the left side of the town hall door)

X = the third digit of the number on the town hall wall
Y = the number of the Lincolnshire regiment in which Private Spencer served

Z = the number of words on the fourth line of the plaque (excluding the Latin motto)
