Geocache Description:

Pinkenba railway station

Pinkenba was originally the terminus station on the Pinkenba railway line, (now it is just the Doomben line), and was a mere 14 kilometres from Central station by rail. First built in 1897, the station was rebuilt in 1969 at this (posteds) location being closer to the township of Pinkenba. There is no need (nor is it legal) to physically go to the posted location coordinates.

Pinkenba Station c.1935

Pinkenba station c.1935

The Pinkenba line opened 1 April 1897. During World Wars I and II, troop camps were located at Pinkenba and nearby because of deep berthing available to ships here at the mouth of the Brisbane River. After the wars, passenger ships of the Orient Steam Navigation Company, later P&O, used the area, and special trains ran from Brisbane to Pinkenba. The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal is located further out past Pinkenba today.

In 1988, part of the line was electrified, but only as far as Eagle Farm station (airport terminus). Diesel-hauled trains operated an infrequent passenger service to Pinkenba. On 27 September 1993, all passenger services on the line were suspended as part of a statewide rationalisation of the rail network, which involved the closing or suspension of services of under-utilised or unprofitable rail lines.

Electric passenger services resumed in 1998, but only as far as Doomben, with bus connections to locations beyond Doomben.

In 2005, the Pinkenba station area became a rubbish recycling site, with large amounts of dirt dumped over the terminus siding. The station building remained until 2016, although badly damaged and used as a dumping ground, and the track that connected the station to the Pinkenba Line was removed. By 2017, the building had been demolished. Queensland Rail still owns the land.

THIS IS AN ANTI-SOCIAL MOB CACHE

To play, a minimum of FOUR players must AT THE SAME TIME be connected whilst located within 100m of the four main North Brisbane railway line terminus stations. The waypoints are shown here, and in the game once started. Yes, four simultaneous players far-flung across North Brisbane. This is a high Difficulty cache.

This is a Geocaching game for multiple players … where there is no need for players to ever meet up in person at all.

Social distancing at its best!

You will need a smartphone (Android or iPhone), with active internet connection.  One per player.  Each smartphone must have Location Services enabled (GPS Satellite tracking).  Please see THIS LINK for assistance on that if needed.
If you manage to start the game from the Android Facebook messenger internal browser, please reopen the link in Samsung Internet or any other browser app for it to successfully use GeoLocation services.

This game has FOUR (4) Target Waypoints, and therefore needs at least FOUR independent players.
To start the game click on the link provided above, or open asmhub.herokuapp.com/ in a browser and enter in the Geocaching ID Code of this cache.

The game screen will display with information about how many players are active in the game currently, where you and they are, and how close each player is to each target waypoint. Each player will be given a unique Player code for this game session, and you can see your code directly underneath the table and above the map display.

There is then a map (with options for streetview or satellite view). This will show where you are currently (green player icon ), and each other player (yellow player icon , clicking on a player icon will reveal the Player code). The map also shows each target waypoint as circles, which will be coloured according to status:

  • Red - means nobody is currently occupying that target waypoint
  • Yellow - means somebody, but not you, is currently occupying that target waypoint
  • Green - means you are occupying that target waypoint.
  • Blue - means something has gone very wrong and the map has stopped working. Please message the cache owner, and restart your browser session.

The map updates based on your location as you move, and will re-centre on your location unless you have shifted the map manually to look around. Press the 'Centre on me' button (underneath the zoom in/out buttons) to re-centre the map on your location.

[Nb: If you zoom the screen too much, the map may end up covering the entire viewing window preventing access to the site outside of the map - simply clicking on your green player icon will reveal a "Top of Screen" button that will reposition the view to the screen top.]

If at any time you wish to quit the game, a Quit Game button persists at the bottom right of the screen.

As soon as all target waypoints are occupied, the screen will display (for those that are occupying a target waypoint at the time) secret reward information - in this case final coordinates of the geocache container. A button is provided to copy that information to your smartphone's memory so you can paste it into another location (for example the final GZ space or personal notes space of your favourite Geocaching application.

Successful players will be removed from the game in the background, meaning any other players not yet there can continue playing separately.

Enjoy!
