Geocache Description:

A cache placed near to Exeter St Davids railway station. This cache has been placed in a location that is beyond the station boundary but within a short distance to give rail passengers the opportunity to find a cache whilst changing or waiting for a train.

Exeter St Davids is one of several railway stations around the city. Although it is not the closest station to Exeter city centre it is the busiest in Devon with 2.6 million passengers and 1 million interchanges taking place each year. A few facts about the station:

  • The first station building on the site was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1844
  • In 1846 a line opened towards Plymouth; initially planned as an 'atmospheric railway' although this was unsuccessful. One of the redundant pumping stations is behind you when standing at GZ.
  • A line towards Crediton opened in 1851 and like the others this was laid to broad gauge (7ft between the rails)
  • When the London & South Western Railway reached Exeter from London Waterloo they built a connection to St Davids. This has the steepest gradient on the rail network at 1 in 38
  • Exeter St Davids is the only station where you can board either of two trains to London that depart in opposite directions
  • There are 6 platforms serving two main lines and four branch lines. Network congestion is often an issue
  • In 2021 a new maintenance depot opened immediately to the west of the station. This is used to serve diesel-multiple-units that operate west of Bristol

You are looking for a home made cache that is hiding in plain sight. You do not need to dismantle anything to access the small plastic tube that contains the logbook. I hope you enjoy this cache and your time in my home city.
